County Commissioner Handbook

Affiliated Groups

The Trefoil Guild

Any branches of the Trefoil Guild that sit within your County are affiliated to the County.

The Trefoil Guild is part of Girlguiding but has a separate constitution and is independently administered. Membership is open to anyone, male or female, aged 18 or over who has been a member of Girlguiding or The Scout Association or who makes the Guide or Scout Promise.

As County Commissioner you will be asked to appoint the Trefoil Guild County Chairman, following a consultation with the outgoing Chairman, the County Executive Committee and Country or Region Chairman. For this reason you should maintain regular contact with your local Trefoil Guild and take time to attend events and get to know their Executive Committee.

Trefoil Guild members may also be volunteers and Leaders within the County. If this is the case they will need to pay subscription fees for both roles.

Members of The Trefoil Guild will have a wide range of skills and experience. They can provide invaluable support at County events and may also be able to help with administrative roles within the County.

Further information can be found on the Trefoil Guild website.

Student Scout and Guide Organisation (SSAGO)

Within your County there may be a Student Scout and Guide Organisation (SSAGO) at a local university or Higher Education College. SSAGO offers students the opportunity to join or stay in contact with Guiding and Scouting.

All clubs must:

  • affiliate to SSAGO
  • be self-financing
  • pay the annual affiliation fee to SSAGO.

All members of SSAGO must comply with the activity and safety rules of Girlguiding and The Scout Association.

Although SSAGO is mainly a social organisation it does provide vital recruitment opportunities in university areas. Many members will have been Leaders before starting university and will be keen to continue in these roles; members who can’t make a regular commitment may wish to volunteer to help at County events. It is a good idea to make contact with the current SSAGO president to explore how their members can support local guiding and keep informed of changes in their Executive Committee.

Further information can be found on the SSAGO website.
